Course Progression: Physical Education

Physical Education National 5

This is a two year co-educational course. During the course you will experience in-depth study of the following areas or components: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Gymnastics, Hockey, Swimming. During the course you will develop your skills as a performer as well as learn how to analyse and develop your performance through the cycle of analysis.

Pupils will complete an internal portfolio (externally marked by the SQA) assessing their knowledge of the factors impacting on performance. Factors include:

  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Physical

Pupils will also be assessed through two practical performances in an activity of their choice.

This is a one year co-educational course that articulates to the National 5 course. During the course you will experience in-depth study of the following areas or components: Badminton, Basketball, Hockey and Swimming. During the course you will develop your skills as a performer as well as learn how to analyse and develop your performance through the cycle of analysis.

Assessment
Assessment is continuous through learning outcomes. Pupils will have a 'one-off' practical performance in an activity of their choice. There will be a written exam (externally marked by the SQA) assessing their knowledge of the factors impacting on performance. Factors include:

  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Physical

Advanced Higher

Physical Education Advanced Higher

This is a one year co-educational course that articulates to the Higher course. The prime focus of the course is the development of performance and you will complete a full and carefully planned cycle of performance analysis, research and development.

Assessment
Assessment is continuous with pupils having to pass learning outcomes as well as their final course assessment. For the course assessment, Pupils complete a Research and Development of a Performance project that is written up in the form of a project report. In addition to this, practical performance assessment is based on performance in one activity.

UKCC Level 1

Physical Education UKCC

UKCC Level 1 Coaching Children Rugby Union

Working with Children in Rugby Union is a rewarding experience, and this qualification course offers guidance on developing the whole child through the game. It will qualify you to coach and referee (game coaching) children in Rugby Union; through your work you will be better able to develop core skills and core values in young players in an active, purposeful, enjoyable and safe environment.

Aims

On completion coaches will be able to:-

  • Demonstrate equitable qualities appropriate to the role and responsibilities of rugby union coach of children
  • Understand the principles of coaching
  • Know how to plan, establish and maintain a safe coaching environment
  • Understand how to plan and support the delivery of activities that are age and stage appropriate for all players
  • Understand how to develop own coaching practice
Outline

This course is organised by approved coaching centres and delivered by Scottish Rugby accredited coach educators.

Assessment

This course is competence based and involves on-course appraisal. It involves both classroom and outdoor practical activities, where coaches will be expected to participate fully in all sessions.

UKCC Level 1 Coaching Qualification Hockey

For potential and trainee coaches, the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level 1 qualification will get you started:

  • Enables individuals to work towards becoming an Assistant Coach
  • Anyone over 16 years old can qualify
  • Introduction to coaching theory and technical skills of hockey

Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership (SL1)

SL1 is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to assist in leading purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity, under direct supervision.

Key content will Leadership skills including organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport.
