Course Progression: Latin

This subject at all levels focuses on the development of reading skills in Latin and the appreciation of Latin literature. Pupils’ knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and syntax is reinforced with regular reading practice, and can enhance understanding of vocabulary and grammar in English and other modern languages. The courses develop precision and clarity of thought and expression, along with such valuable skills as recall and evaluation. Pupils at all levels are introduced to the literature that has influenced European cultural thought and are encouraged to base clear, unprejudiced judgments on close reading of the ancient texts.

Latin (S3/S4) National 4/5

All pupils will begin to study for the National 5 qualification, although some pupils may find the demands of National 5 too challenging and therefore, the National 4 qualification may be more suitable. For these pupils there will be an opportunity to transfer to the National 4 course at some point during S3/S4.

The course consists of two elements:

The development of reading skills in Latin with a view to translating an unseen passage.  The Cambridge Latin course is used throughout to structure learning.  A word list is provided for the passage set for translation in the external examination.

  • The study of a variety of Latin authors, both in English and Latin, from such genres as love poetry, epic and letter writing, with a view to accurate understanding of the meaning and tone of the texts, their stylistic merits and cultural contexts.

 

 

 

Higher

Latin Higher

The course consists of two elements:

The further development of skills in handling Latin grammar and syntax with a view to translating an unseen passage. A word list is provided for the passage set for translation in the external examination.

The study of extracts from two Latin authors - Virgil’s portrait of Dido in his epic poem The Aeneid, and Cicero’s prosecution speech against the corrupt governor Verres. Students develop an understanding of each line of text and are asked to comment critically on use of language, tone, structure, and argument.

Advanced Higher

Pupils’ knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and syntax is reinforced with regular reading practice, and can enhance understanding of vocabulary and grammar in English and other modern languages.  The courses develop precision and clarity of thought and expression, along with such valuable skills as recall and evaluation.  Pupils at all levels are introduced to the literature that has influenced European cultural thought and are encouraged to base clear, unprejudiced judgments on close reading of the ancient texts.

Latin (S6) Advanced Higher

The course consists of three elements:

The further development of skills in handling Latin grammar and syntax with a view to translating an unseen prose passage. Pupils are provided with a word list to assist with their translation.

The study of the development of Latin love poetry from Catullus to Ovid, focussing on a close study of Ovid’s Amores.

A dissertation (written in English) of approximately 4,000 words on a social, literary, philosophical or historical topic relating to the Roman world.
