George Watson’s College was awarded the British Council International Schools Award for the first time in 2017 (2017 to 2020). The Award recognises schools who have shown a commitment to embedding international awareness and understanding across their school. This work has been embedded across the school through the UNCRC Rights Respecting Schools Award and through the teaching of the Global Goals (Sustainable Development Goals). This includes a P5 comparative study of France and Scotland with a pen pal exchange with a french school in P6, study of Spanish culture in P7, S1/2 Global Education Fortnight and S5/6 trips to China and Malawi. GWC is also a SWIRE Chinese Language Centre alongside two local state schools.
All of our S2 pupils have the opportunity to take part in an international visit to France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Canada. The application for these opens in February 2020, with the exception of the S4 Don Mercer exchange. Students apply the year before they travel e.g. the Canada exchange is applied for in S2 and students travel in S3 and all students travel during October half term.
Pupils from S3 upwards have an ever-increasing range of international options, including Toronto in Canada (S3), Bochum in Germany (S5), Beauvais in France (S5), Valencia in Spain (S3 to S5) and Melbourne in Australia (S5).
We also offer a range of gap year opportunities to S6 pupils including a sports assistant post in South Africa, a chance to study as a freshman at college in the USA and a teaching assistant post in Australia. In addition, one student will have the opportunity to spend up to a full year in Taiwan as an English teaching assistant.
There are several opportunities available to S5 and S6 pupils to apply for educational travel awards ranging from £200 to £1000. This includes the Murray Language Development Awards, The Sanson and Women Watsonian Centenary Awards and the Sir Roger Young Memorial Award.
