Victory for U16 Rugby Team

Published on 6 December 2018

On the Wednesday 5 December, Scottish rugby's home, BT Murrayfield, played host to the U16 Scottish Schools' Cup – with Watson’s securing a win against High School Of Dundee. There was a large gathering of cheering supporters for both teams. The Watson's support was as excellent as ever, giving the players a massive boost throughout. Before the match started, pipe bands from both schools played, raising the atmosphere and building nicely up to KO.

The match started and within 1 minute we were behind, conceding possession close our own line with the Dundee back row claiming the ball and reaching out for the score. There was an almost instant reply, straight from the KO the ball was charged down and gathered, and after a couple of phases Number 8 Michael Cantle (S4) barged his way over the line. That levelled the scores at 5-5 and although we were camped in half throughout we went into half time with all to play for.

The second half started as the first finished, a constant stream of pressure but again with no end product. Having been held up again and then losing possession when the line was there, Dundee sparked a counter attack and would have taken the lead back for themselves had it not been for an excellent chase and cover tackle from winger Zack Neil (S4). On 49mins however we did retake the lead, a good serious of possession and attack play up the near touchline unleashed Sam Cavens (S4) who chipped ahead with the onrushing Brodie Young (S4) controlled the ball well with his right foot to nudge it over the line, and dive on it to give us a 10-5 lead.

This seemed to calm the boys down and with some outstanding close quarter work from the forwards we nullified Dundee and kept a the ball for an extended period of time, playing a very mature and controlled game in difficult conditions. This lead to our final score of the night when some neat, direct back play allowed Struan Ambrose (S4) too run in untouched from 40m and give us a solid 15-5 lead with 12mins to go.

This was the end of the scoring and both teams should be commended on their run getting to the final and for a very competitive game played in the right spirit. Archie Watters (S5) was awarded Player of the Match which was just reward for his exceptional work rate around the field and his constant threat when carrying the ball at the Dundee defence. Well done to all the boys, a thoroughly deserved victory for all their efforts throughout the past couple of seasons.
