Understanding Criminal Justice

Published on 6 January 2004 Categories: Senior School

During the winter term 16 pupils from Advanced Higher Modern Studies who are studying Crime, Law and Society went to New York to study various aspects of crime and justice, accompanied by three members of staff. Amongst the places they visited were the Red Hook Community Centre for Restorative Justice in Brooklyn, the Horizon Juvenile Detention Centre in the Bronx and the Courts of Justice in Manhattan. The pupils also attended tutorials in the John Jay Academy of Criminal Justice and Fordham School of Law. They attended a conference at the Sony Corporation as well.

Several of these pupils had the opportunity to attend, and participate actively in, the only public consultation undertaken in Scotland by the Coulsfield Inquiry into Alternatives to Prison. This took place in mid-November in the Playfair Library, University of Edinburgh, administered by the Royal Society of Arts and facilitated on the evening by journalist and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch.
