Our U19 boys’ squash team won this year’s Lothian Independent School's Squash league for the first time in many years.
Captained by Sean Sproule (S6), the team regulars were Kevin Keane, Tom Gilchrist, Tom Frazer and Peter Akyol (all S5), with Rupert Titterington (S6) and Michael Jenkins (S4) playing occasional fixtures throughout the season.
An exciting final game against Stewart’s Melville concluded their most exciting and successful season for probably a decade. Stewart’s Melville has won the Lothian Independent Schools Squash league for many years. Going into the match, three points separated Watson's from Stewart’s Melville at the top, so it was all to play for.
Our boys needed both to win the fixture and win sets from every match in order to gain enough points to win the league. Unfortunately our first two players lost their matches, despite gaining sets from their opponents. At 0–2 down in Tom Gilchrist's match, we were about to admit defeat, when from nowhere he turned his game around clinched an exciting 3–2 win! Kevin Keane was next, who also managed a closely fought 3–2 win, so the league title was down to captain, Sean Sproule.
In a truly nail-biting match, games were lost and won by both players, and after multiple match points against Sean, and then finally for him, he clinched a 3–2 win to bring the U19 league trophy to Watson’s. Every point counted and we could not have gained a win without the sets won by Tom Frazer and Peter Akyol, so it was a great team effort.
