On a sunny Saturday morning at Inverleith those gathered to watch the semi final of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish U18 Cup semi final between Stewart's Melville and Watson's were entertained by a thrilling game of rugby.
Despite talk amongst rugby circles that GWC were the favourites Stewart's Melville were leading 17-15 at half time, and some great rugby was in evidence at what was a very well attended game. First half tries were scored by Michael Gillespie (S6), Dugald Berezford and Adam Hastings (both S5).
However, Watson's came back with a second try for Dugald, a try by Jamie MacDonald (S6), and a Hasting's penalty kick to bring the scoreline to 17-28. A late try by Stewart's Melville made for a nervous last few minutes, requiring some great defence.
Ally Donaldson, GWC's Director of Rugby, said, "Stewart’s-Melville took the game to us and showed character.”
Victory in the other semi-final by Merchiston ensures an all-Edinburgh U18 final on the international pitch at Murrayfield on Thursday 29 November, kick off 7.45pm. The U16 Cup final between Strathallan, who beat our U16 squad in the semi final, and Merchiston will take place prior to this at 6.00pm.
The boys would be delighted if as many Watson's supporters as possible can turn out to support them next week.
