On a wonderfully sunny Saturday morning, Watson’s pupils participated in six tournaments and came away with five wins.
At Goldenacre, the U16 and U18 boys’ rugby teams and the girls’ 1st XI hockey teams were out in force and all won their respective competitions. This is the first time any school has won all three Goldenacre competitions.
The girls won their competition beat Strathallan 1–0 in the final, making it five wins out of the last seven years. Both rugby teams took on Heriot’s in the finals of the U16 and U18 competitions. Despite playing Heriot’s on their home turf, our U16 boys retained the trophy with a nail-biting 26–24 win. Our U18 team had an easier win against their hosts in the final, winning 30–5.
Meanwhile our girls’ 2nd XI hockey players were at St George’s playing in the St George’s 2nd XI Tournament. They beat the home team 3–0 in final.
However, not willing to be outshone by their Senior School counterparts our Junior School hockey players went off to Haddington to participate in the Compass School tournaments (both as defending champions). The U11 and U10 squads were compiled from P7, P6 and P5 pupils, yet spectators would never of known that it was the first time the girls had played together. Our teams met the hosts in the finals, which both were decided on a cone dribbling speed contest, when the scores remained level, even after 5 minutes of ‘golden play’. The U10 team took advantage of a Compass error to win first, with the GWC U11s being beaten by a matter of seconds. So our U10 team came home triumphant, and the U11s had to be satisfied with the runners-up position.
A superbly sunny Saturday morning of sporting success.
