SQA Results 2014 – S6 Exam Performance Continues to Improve

Published on 5 August 2014 Categories: Senior School

The Senior School when the blossom is out on the treesThis year, our examination results at all levels are outstanding.

The introduction this year in Watson’s of National 4 and National 5 in Mathematics, Latin, Drama, Health & Food Technology and Business Management has made little difference to the pass rates achieved. 45 pupils (19.0%) achieved eight or more As in Intermediate 2 / National 5.

Once again, over half of the S5 Higher presentations resulted in A grades – 54.2%. This year 46 pupils (20.9%) gained straight As in five or more Highers.  Of these, seven sat six Highers and achieved straight As, six achieving straight A Band 1s.

The S6 results, both in Higher and Advanced Higher, are amongst our best ever. Advanced Highers remain a popular choice for our S6 pupils, and this year’s overall pass rate is one of our best ever (92.9% compared to 89.6% last year). With a total of 54.8% A grades achieved, it is worthy to note that six pupils gained four A passes at Advanced Higher, 22 three As and 20 two As. The trend of our S6 results improving year on year (in Higher and AH) is testament to the focus and commitment of our senior pupils, and their recognition of the ever more competitive world of Higher and Further Education and how important it is to make sure that each school year counts.

Watson's pupils continue to be successful in gaining places at their chosen universities and I want to congratulate those many S5 and S6 pupils who met their conditional university offers today, and to wish all our leavers every success in the next stage of their careers.

Results like these require great commitment on the part of our hard working pupils, but they would be the first to acknowledge that the support and encouragement of the dedicated and professional staff at the School plays as crucial a role in the School’s continuing academic success. I would like also to thank you the parents in your role of supporting and encouraging your daughters and sons and the School at this important stage of their academic careers. We can be justifiably proud of what has been accomplished.
