Earlier this week, some of our S5 and S6 pupils attended our annual Business Breakfast, to get an insight into the world of family businesses.
This year’s key speaker was Mary Contini, co-owner of Valvona and Crolla, the celebrated Edinburgh delicatessen, who provided a fascinating talk, in which she shared her views of what is important in business. Honesty, openness, hard work and fun were recurrent themes within the talk, which was lively and entertaining. She explained the importance of embracing change and opportunity, however she also highlighted how history can impact on the business decision making process.
The format of the breakfast also gave pupils the opportunity to meet local business people, who discussed their businesses with them and spoke to the pupils about their own career aspirations. This was done over a distinctly Italian breakfast, which included freshly baked ciabatta rolls which had come from Valvona and Crolla that morning.
Although it was a very early start for our pupils, it was worth it, as it gave them food for thought about their future working lives.
