Over the last few years our girls have been the team to beat, but it’s been five years since our boys won the Scottish Schools’ Hockey Cup.
But with Heriot’s narrowly beating our girls in their Quilter Cheviot Scottish Schools’ Cup semi-final earlier in the week in a match that went to running penalties to decide, it was up to our boys to carry the Watson’s flag into the finals.
The boys went out on a cold Friday 13 March to take on Edinburgh Academy in the Quilter Cheviot Scottish Schools’ Cup final at the National Hockey Centre at Glasgow Green. Having beaten Balerno, Strathallan in the quarterfinal, and then Fettes College 3–2 in the semi-final, the team was quietly confident.
Head boy, Andrew Cockburn (S6) scored an early goal and it remained 1–0 until half time. But the second half brought with it a goal-fest! Rob Spiers (S6) scored twice, while captain Andrew Dumble and Sean Horgan (both S6) all found the back of the net winning the cup for Watson’s with a convincing 5–0 scoreline.
