The rowing squad in Durham

Our rowers had a good time at the Durham Head this weekend, despite the frozen canal and recent prelim exams having an impact on training, we picked up a handful of wins in what was a solid overall squad performance.

Highlights were:

  • A first place for Oliver Fenton (S6) in the Open Junior single sculls and second place for James Stevenson (S6), separated by a mere 0.5sec.
  • Katy McDonald (S5) was second in the Women's Junior event, where 0.7secs separated the fastest three scullers.
  • A win in Men's IM3 coxed fours for Duncan Kuwall (S5), Laurence Bialy, Oliver Fenton, James Stevenson, and cox, Rebecca Moore (all S6).
  • A win for our J16 quad sculls team of Lev Demyanov, Euan Dickerson (both S4), Ben Carruthers, and Alex Chisholm (both S5).
  • Katy McDonald, along with her partner from Castle Semple, Laura McDonald, won the Junior Women's doubles.

Our fastest crew the Open Junior coxed four – Alasdair Watson (S6), Duncan Kuwall, Oliver Fenton, James Stevenson, and cox, Rebecca Moore – finished ninth overall (the fastest crew from outside N.E. England). This was one place behind event winners Durham School on their home water – an encouraging performance having also narrowed the gap from 28 seconds to just over two seconds since their last meeting at the Rutherford Head in November.
