Pupils attend a seminar as part of the day Meeting the Researchers at Dundee UniversityOn Wednesday 9 March seven Watson’s pupils from S5 and S6 who are interested in pursuing careers in Science and Medicine had the opportunity to attend Meet the Researcher Showcase Event organised by Medical Research Scotland at Dundee Science Centre.

The morning started with an inspirational talk by Professor William (Bill) Hunter, Professor of Structural Biology, University of Dundee who outlined his career path and how he had come to be in his position today. His enthusiasm for scientific research and career opportunities in the field for young people was clearly communicated. He firmly believes it is his turn to inspire young people with a desire to see what they can do!

The next speaker was Dr Vanessa Duncan, Senior Research Associate, Novabiotics Ltd. who leads the Novamycin programme. This is NovaBiotics’ novel antifungal peptide developed for front-line treatment of yeast and mould infections. Again Dr Duncan highlighted the opportunities she had had and how her academic path has led her to the role she currently holds.

Pupils then had the opportunity to meet other researchers from a broad range of backgrounds. The pupils enjoyed asking questions and seeing the researchers’ posters/stands. Pupils heard about the opportunities the researchers had had as undergraduates or postgraduates to take up a research placement, often funded by Medical Research Scotland and how this had frequently led to an employment offer.

As Patron of the Medical Research Scotland, Princess Anne was a very special visitor to the morning and added to what was a very informative morning.
