George Watson’s College Pipes & Drums enjoyed an extremely successful day at the World Solo Drumming & International Solo Tenor Drumming competition which took place at Glasgow Caledonian University in October.

Eight pupils from the Pipe Band represented our school and achieved impressive placements. Of our eight competitors, five made the final prize lists in their respective events, with two others finishing in seventh place, just outside the prizes.

Blair (S1), came second in the Section 1 March final for 13 years and under age group, after coming first in his qualifying section earlier in the competition. Freddie (S2) came sixth in the Section 3 MSR final for 13 years and under age group. Guy (S5) was second in Section 4 MSR for 15 years and under and Jack (S5) was sixth in the same event.

In the International Tenor Competition George (S6) was placed fourth in Section 5 MSR for players 16 to 18 years.

MSR stands for ‘March, Strathspey and Reel’ which are three types of pieces played by pipe bands and are considered the gold standard format in competitions.
