For Edinburgh, a relatively dreary Tuesday morning; for GWC Pipe Band, something quite the opposite. Our American adventure began at Edinburgh airport on Tuesday 13 February. A short flight to Heathrow, followed by a long flight to the United States saw us land in LAX. Before we knew it, our adventure had begun. After a 24-hour journey, beginning at Turnhouse and ending in Long Beach, we enjoyed what can only be described as a glorious night’s sleep on board the Queen Mary, before taking on Disneyland the next day... which was simply magical.
On Thursday the band enjoyed an appearance on the local television channel, KTLA, a ghost tour of the Queen Mary, a trip to Long Beach for lunch and of course, two band practices! Friday was another unforgettable day. With another band practice under our belts we set off to the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’ and Sunset Boulevard. We capped off our afternoon with an ice cream on Santa Monica pier. After a truly memorable afternoon, we returned to the Queen Mary to have one final practice before the big weekend.
We enjoyed many a success whilst in California but bagging first place in both the Medley and MSR Competitions at the Scots Festival was most definitely the highlight. Success also came in the form of Solos with many of our Pipers and Drummers placing and taking away prizes. It is safe to say our American adventure has laid a great foundation for what we hope will be a very successful season!
