On 18 March our P7 boys won the P7 13-a-side tournament, hosted by Stewart’s Melville College, managing to concede only a single try.
Eight of the best teams from around Scotland competed in this annual competition for the P7 cup, and this year the tournament was as exciting as usual. Our boy’s fitness meant that although the final two group matches against Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy tested the boys, they managed to finish the stronger side. The semi-final was tight. A derby against our rivals from Heriot’s was always going to be a tasty fixture. Nevertheless, the boys defended their 22-yard line as if it was their own try line and as a result Heriot’s never looked like scoring.
The final was against Edinburgh Academy. It is fair to say that they threw everything at us. The tackles in the contact area were ferocious and by the end of normal time, with the boys exhausted, the score was 0-0! Ten minutes of sudden death/extra time were played. For the first five minutes it looked as though the stalemate would continue and the cup would be shared. In a final effort, the backs took the ball deep into the opposition's 22, Harry Clark took the contact and released a phenomenal pass to Josh Kerr who, in his own words said, "There was no way anyone was going to stop me." In the end, Watson's edged it - a great end to a super tournament.
