The girls celebrate their winRebecca Poon and Jodie White (both S4) continued their impressive run of form with victory in the Northern Junior Debating Championship, held at Royal Grammar School, Newcastle, on Saturday 21 September. The girls defeated sixty teams from all over the UK to lift the trophy for the first time in Watson's history.

After three rounds of debates on topics including public referendums, reality TV and single sex schools, the four highest placed teams took part in a final in front of a large audience. Drawn in opposition to the motion, This House would boycott the Russian Winter Olympics, Rebecca was methodical in her rebuttal of the St. Paul's proposition case, before she offered an intelligent, well-analysed alternative. Jodie followed this up with a fine summation to ensure that Watson's would take the victory. It is the third major competition that the pair has won in 2013.

Jodie also has the final of the Scottish Championship Junior Mace to look forward to this Wednesday which is to be held at the Scottish Parliament. Jodie and her partner, Keshav Arvind (S4), will speak on the motion, This House would ban parents from smacking their children.
