Many congratulations to Kirsty Law (S6) for winning the Merchant Company Award for Initiative at an event held yesterday evening at the Merchants' Hall.
Her submission for the Award was based upon her inspiration to promote traditional music to a new audience and to promote and support the Martyn Bennett Trust, set up in memory of Martyn Bennett, a young and gifted exponent of traditional Scottish music, who died in his 30s of cancer.
Kirsty arranged a concert and ceilidh at Watson's in March, bringing together the best of the up-and-coming talent in this genre and providing an opportunity for them to perform alongside professional musicians of great standing within the traditional music scene. In the process, the event raised £2000 for the Trust and the vitality of the music performed and the musical talent on display – including Kirsty’s singing, captivated the audience.
This is the second year our pupils have won this Award, which was launched last year.
Gareth Edwards, Principal stated, “All three submissions for this year’s Award highlight the level of enterprise shown by the students of the Merchant Company Schools. We must continue to promote such initiative, so that our pupils are encouraged and feel confident to identify and develop new and original ideas.”
