On Friday 9 February, we were delighted to welcome the Guest of Honour, Ms Frances Guy (Class of 1977), current Gender Team Leader, Regional Bureau for Arab States, United Nations Development Programme, Amman, Jordan for Founder’s Day.
Between her time leaving George Watson’s College and now, Frances has accomplished many feats in the name of equality, including becoming the UN Representative of Women in Iraq and a Former Ambassador of Yemen and Lebanon.
During her fascinating speech, our guest stressed the importance of education in times of adversity as a way to bring sanctuary, normality and stability to the lives of children and parents alike. Calling upon her experience, she provided moving examples of how education is so desperately sought for in these times, overcoming barriers in culture and language, bringing light to how incredibly lucky we are to be able to go to a school like George Watson’s College.
Overall, this inspiring speech in conjunction with readings, hymns and musical performances from our Watson’s community made Founder's Day 2018 a memorable day for all.
