Founder's Day

Founder's Day

Published on 15 March 2010

Founder's Day 2010On Founder’s Day this year we were joined by The Rt Hon George Grubb, Lord Lieutenant and Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh; our many distinguished guests; and our guest speaker, former pupil, international rugby player, businessman, current parent, and great supporter of Watson’s, Mr Gavin Hastings OBE (class of 1980).

In his speech Gavin said that as a pupil he never imagined that he would be standing on the stage as Guest Speaker at Founder’s Day. He recounted how he loved coming to Watson’s, looking forward to playing sport, and a healthy rivalry with Heriot’s.

The arrival of an up and coming rugby player called John Rutherford in the PE Department while he was at Watson’s proved to be a significant event in his life. He provided Gavin with the inspiration to become much more interested in rugby and to train and practise harder than he had ever done before, because he wanted to emulate someone whom he had got to know well and respected.

His message to the pupils was to learn from those around them, from those who have achieved incredible success and to remember the list of people who have succeeded in all walks of life having had a Watson’s education.
