Robbie following his record beating throw, observed by John MacDonald (who has held the record since 1955)Robbie Nairn (S5) broke the School Record for the Shot Put, winning the West of England Cup, earlier this afternoon with a throw of 14.74m. The record (14.34m) had stood since 1955 and was held by Major Gen. John MacDonald (Class of 1956), gained during an athletics match versus Heriot's at Myreside.

However, the weight of shot put John had thrown in the 1950s was 6.25kg, compared with the 6kg shot used nowadays. So it was agreed to allow Robbie to attempt to beat the record distance with the heavier 6.25kg later in the day.

Robbie's second throw with the heavier shot put was a huge 15.64m, a huge 1.3m longer!

It was an honour to have Major Gen. MacDonald at Myreside to witness this historic achievement.
