Ben Stanley (S5) and Lachlan White (S4) became the top UK school debaters with an outstanding victory in the English Speaking Union International Mace, one of the oldest and most prestigious debating competitions in the world.
After winning the Scottish leg last month, the boys were drawn against Wales in the semi-final, in which they had to oppose the motion, This House believes that public sector organisations should introduce quotas for women at executive level. In the final, their opponents were the English champions, Wellington College. Watson's had to propose the motion, This House would prefer a world with free movement across borders.
After a very high quality debate, the judges announced that Scotland had won in a unanimous decision. A fitting end to an excellent season of debating at Watson's.
