Charities Win from Profitable Competition

GalleonEnvironmentally friendly shopping bags, I love GWC T-shirts, decorated photo frames and the ubiquitous 'hoody' proved winners for the George Watson's pupils who attended the Lothian Region Young Enterprise Awards Evening last month.

All three teams impressed the judges with their business acumen.

George Watson's had not won the overall competition for 20 years but over the course of the evening our pupils won the award for Best Finance Director (and came runners-up in the same category); picked up the highly prized Best Managing Director award; won the award for Best Business Idea and gained a third placing for Best Presentation.

The big finale was the Award for Best Company Overall. This was won by Crunch with their 'Green at Heart' canvas shopping bags, and Mercury's photo frames resulted in the second place. This means that Crunch will now compete in the National Competition in Glasgow on 13 June.

The three companies certainly deserve their success after their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the session. All 35 S5 students involved in the programme learnt much about business and team working, gained much personal satisfaction and had a lot of fun in the process.

However, the success goes further as the pupils' efforts raised £3,000 in profits from their trading. This will be donated to Tiny Tickers, Children 1st, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Maggie’s Cancer Centres.
