The George Watson’s Family Foundation was set up in 1997 to continue the spirit of the legacy left by George Watson. His views were clear; he wanted children from less advantaged backgrounds to enjoy the quality of education available to those more fortunate. The Foundation is funded annually by donations from parents, former pupils, staff and other supporters and by George Watson’s College.
Financial Assistance is available for children in Primary 6 to Senior 6, with priority given to those joining us at Primary 6, Primary 7 and Senior 1. This is means-tested financial assistance, so evidence of the income that comes into your home will be requested confidentially.
For pupils in receipt of a Foundation Place, assistance may also be provided towards the cost of school uniform, books, a laptop or tablet, school lunches and certain curricular activities such as S1 Orientation and S3 Projects. The Foundation is unable to provide any assistance towards the cost of other extra-curricular activities, music lessons or other school trips.
Short Term Fee Assistance
Short term fee assistance may be provided to families with children already in the School where a significant change in circumstances has resulted in difficulty in paying fees and this may otherwise result in a child being withdrawn from the School.
Applicants to S1 will be invited to attend the Scholarship assessment day depending on their performance in the Entrance Assessment, you do not apply for a Scholarship. All awards are tenable for a maximum of six years, subject to satisfactory progress in each year.
Two of the Academic Scholarships are awarded equal in value to 25% of the full tuition fee. Other Scholarships of 3% of the tuition fee are invested annually in a trust fund for the pupil, which the pupil can access when he/she leaves the School after S5 or S6.
Applicants for entry to Senior School who are musically talented can apply for the Ferguson and Bruce Music Scholarships which provide annual music tuition fees for two instruments or for voice and instrument. These are awarded on an assessment of a candidate’s musical promise made at the time of, and in conjunction with, the Senior School Assessment.
The awards are made initially for three years; their continuation after that will depend on satisfactory progress during S1 to S3 and a commitment to study Music as a main subject in school thereafter.
The Enablement Fund
George Watson’s College has taken steps to improve its facilities in order that children with physical disabilities can attend the School. The purpose of The Enablement Fund is to provide further assistance for pupils with a physical disability to attend the School. The Fund is dedicated specifically to help these children by giving them financial assistance to meet any additional costs they will incur by attending George Watson’s College.
