Foundation Places are available to pupils joining us in year groups from Primary 6 upwards and are intended to provide life-changing opportunities for children and young people from families with little or no previous experience of independent education.
Pupils receiving Foundation Places will typically have a particular ability or talent which might not otherwise be developed at their catchment school and/or face particular social or educational challenges which attending Watson’s could help to address. Although all pupils awarded Foundation Places must meet, or have the potential to meet, our usual academic standard, Foundation Places are not scholarships and are not awarded on the basis of academic criteria alone.
Eligibility for Foundation Places is restricted to children and young people from families where the household income (before tax) is less than £30,000 a year and support is available up to 100% of the school fees, with additional support being available for school lunches, transport, uniform, trips and visits, music lessons and equipment for learning, including electronic devices. Regrettably, the availability of Foundation Places is restricted and not all candidates who may be eligible for a Foundation Place or who would benefit from one will be successful in gaining an award.
Foundation Places are funded by the George Watson’s Family Foundation (Charity Number: SC004818), the George Watson’s Endowment Trust (Charity Number: SC048956) and by school fee income.
