St Giles' Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

St Giles' Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Published on 18 December 2019

Our annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols took place last night on Tuesday 17 December in the beautiful surroundings of St Giles’ Cathedral.

The event, as ever, was a celebration of the festive season and also of the wonderful musicians and choir singers at our school. The congregation was treated to performances by the College Chorus, Boys' Choir, Galleon Singers, Cantemus, Chamber Choir and Ex Corde Choir.

A solo verse from Once in Royal David’s City was a fitting start to a string of beautiful performances throughout the evening.

Pupil representatives from each Senior School year group each read one of the Nine Lessons to the congregation. The Lessons are nine short Bible readings that tell the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus.

The service ended with a joyous rendition of Hark the Herald Angels Sing and a blessing from Rev Calum MacLeod.

In the spirit of Christmas, collections were also gathered for two charities. Feed the Minds, which focuses on developing skills and independence within some of the world’s poorest communities and Fresh Start, an Edinburgh based charity supporting people who have been homeless to establish themselves in their new home.
