This year’s S3 production of Oliver! was an incredible success. With an impressive standard from such young performers, the production was a credit to all involved. The audience was immersed in tension and excitement from start to finish. From the Artful Dodger’s cheeky ‘Consider Yourself’, to Nancy’s emotional rendition of ‘As Long He Needs Me’, the cast brought the much-loved characters to life. Maddy McGee perfectly captured the innocence and kindness of Oliver, while Christian McCulloch embodied Fagin’s likeable craftiness. Emilie Jardine’s obvious musical talent shone as she played Nancy and brought the audience to tears as she portrayed the complex character. The rest of the main cast’s mature performances could not be faulted, and the dedication and passion was evident throughout. Of course, the show would not have been complete without the enthusiastic and engaging ensemble.
Credit must also be given to the wonderful work done behind the scenes. The production would not have been possible without the commitment of the director, Ms Alice Culpin, and the drama staff. As always, the band, led by Mr David Elliott, was terrific and essential in creating the changes in atmosphere from scene to scene. The hard work that must have gone into creating the detailed set was unimaginable, but undeniably paid off. Lighting and props crews were key to the production’s success, as was the costume crew as they transformed the cast into threadbare orphans and spirited townsfolk.
Many of the cast will undoubtedly go on to perform in senior productions, and we look forward to seeing their enormous potential progress.
