Spotlight On: Our Aspiring Artists

Spotlight On: Our Aspiring Artists
  • Senior School

With our Art Exhibition approaching this Friday, we shine a spotlight on a selection of our aspiring artists who are showcasing their current pieces for the general public at the end of the week.

Up first, we have Armeen (S6) who discusses what attracted him to photography; drawing on the elements that inspired him to create his brilliant images:

“I have been doing photography for around 7 months and have enjoyed every moment of it.

The style of my portfolio is modern architecture. I chose this as I have always been interested in the minimal, geometric forms on these buildings. This also led me to being very interested in the photographer Hélène Binet, one of the leading architectural photographers in the world. Her work grabbed my attention since she was also fascinated in minimalism and photography that isn’t too overwhelming to look at.

There is a common theme in my photographs where I included reflections in many images. I purposely added this technique as it enables the viewer to view the building in a different, unseen way. Using

reflections to my advantage allowed me to explore creating patterns and symmetry, and even creating optical illusions in my photographs. I also included a variety of compositional techniques, like rule of thirds, leading lines, sub framing, and others in order to lead the viewer’s eyes to specific points of interest in these images. This is

clear in one of my photographs where I sub-framed a family walking through a path towards the landscape in the background. This technique was important as the viewer is focussed on what is inside this frame and draws the viewer’s attention to this family. I also used leading lines in another photograph where a ledge beside the water curves from the bottom left corner, to the dark entrance of the building in the centre of the image, leading the viewer’s eye to this entrance, creating a sense of mystery and leaving the viewer curious of what is inside this entrance.

I am planning to study architecture in the future as I’ve always had an interest in the buildings that we see and how they’ve been constructed.”
