Returning to St Giles'

Nine Lessons and Carols 2021
  • Senior School

As we approach the end of 2022, we reflect on how life has started to (slowly by surely) return to 'normal' after a two year period of uncertainty.

For the community here at Watson's, this means welcoming the return of iconic events in the school calendar which previously could not have gone ahead. One of those engagements is, of course, our renowned Service of Nine Lessons & Carols at St Giles' Cathedral.

We caught up with Senior Chorister, Larissa (S6) to find out how she feels about returning to St Giles' for the acclaimed service in what is now her final year as a pupil:

"These past two years have been hard on everyone, and not being able to all sing together has been difficult for many of us. This year sees some normality returning and is the key reason we, as a school, are so thankful to be back in St Giles’ Cathedral again, singing all our favourite carols and pieces in the iconic 'Service of Nine Lessons & Carols'.

It has been tough trying to bounce back into choirs but with the help of our amazing Director of Music, Mr Griffin, we have been able to prepare to the best of our ability for all our annual concerts and services. I have been counting the days to our annual St Giles’ service since the summer time, and have been excited to start preparing because, sadly, this is my last service as part of the GWC choir.

This service means so much to me as I am surrounded by so many talented singers and teachers who also share as much of a love for music and this service as I do. I’m particularly excited that I’ve been selected to sing the solo in 'Once in Royal David’s City'! A huge honour as I come towards the end of my school career. I have taken part in the Senior School choirs since S1, as well as lots of other choirs in Junior School. Performing in St Giles’ is the highlight of the year for me and many others in the choirs across the Senior School.

We all can’t wait to share this music with you again."

Please join us at St Giles' on Tuesday 20 December at 7pm for our in-person return of the Service of Nine Lessons & Carols and help us fill Edinburgh's beautiful cathedral with festive cheer!
