Pipes & Drums: Invitational Competition 2023

On Sunday 5 March, the George Watson’s College Pipes & Drums once again hosted our annual invitational competition for pipe bands, solo piping & drumming.

This was the first opportunity to return to the full event without restrictions and proved to be a huge success with all schools and visitors alike.

The event was well attended with 13 schools represented, 21 band performances and over 100 solo piping and drumming performances throughout the day. It was wonderful to also be able to welcome back spectators to support all of the bands and soloists. 

Our Novice B band secured their first win of the season in the Junior band category whilst the Juvenile band placed 2nd and the Novice A band finished 5th in the Senior band category. A summary of results from the band competitions can be viewed here. 

Ally (S5) became Champion Piper in the 16 & under piping and Tom (S4) became Champion Drummer in the 18 & under drumming. Our other solo competitors also featured extensively in the prize list of their respective competitions: Gregor (S2), Max (S2), Oli (S3), Rory (S5) Archie (S5) and Freddie (S5).  

Congratulations to all the bands and solo competitors who took part in the invitational competition. A huge thank you must go to all the parent helpers and staff who made the day a success. The event was a fantastic start to the 2023 competition season and we are grateful to all the schools who participated.

The GWC Pipes & Drums are now preparing for the Scottish Schools Championships which takes place this Sunday.
