S1 STEM Showcase Event

STEM displays in sports hall
  • Senior School

As a former Governor and now a Trustee of the George Watson’s Family Foundation and with a background in Science and Engineering, I was delighted to be asked to act as a judge on the panel for this year’s S1 STEM Showcase event.

The gym hall was echoing with excitement as the pupils prepared their displays and tested their working models. With ten categories for entrants, from Earth and Environment to Physics and Astronomy, I was thrilled to be asked to judge the Engineering teams.

The siren announced the start of the judging and I progressed from one display and presentation to the next, as we assessed the one hundred entrants.  The enthusiasm was palpable as the teams presented their eight weeks of hard work, using the STEM skills they had learned in research, methodology, analysis and results and demonstrated their scale models. Many ideas were so creative they showed potential for future development and wider social impact.

A winner from each category will be announced soon, along with the overall winner.

Thanks to Helen Inglis, Iain Lawrie, Helen Croft and the STEM team for all their hard work in a very successful event and hopefully these young scientists and engineers will continue to innovate in the future.
