GWC remembers the Duke of Edinburgh

It is both with regret and fondness that we reflect on Prince Philip’s passing. 

The Duke of Edinburgh’s ties to our school are strong, as an Old Master of the Merchant Company and as a patron of the DofE Award scheme in which so many of our pupils, former and current, have participated in. A lucky few, on completion of their Gold Award, would have met the Prince but all of our pupils who took part would carry on the important life skills and sense of confidence that the award instills. 

Prince Philip paid a visit to our school on 6 May 1966, when he was a Master of the Merchant Company. Visits followed from the Her Majesty the Queen in 1982 and in 2020 by HRH the Princess Royal, who officially opened the John Martin Building, marking 88 years to the day that her Great Uncle, HRH Prince George, opened buildings at Colinton Road.

As a mark of respect, and in recognition of our relationship with Prince Philip, the flags on our Senior School will fly at half-mast for the eight days of official mourning.
