George Watson's College and Watsonian Club mourn the loss of Scott Hastings

George Watson’s College and the Watsonian Club mourn the loss of Scott Hastings and invite our community to join us in commemorating his life with the opening of a book of condolence at Myreside. 

George Watson’s College and the Watsonian Club have joined in sharing their shock and sadness following news of the death of Scott Hastings. 

Principal, Lisa Kerr said: 

“Scott attended the Junior and Senior Schools at Watson’s, leaving in 1982. As well as being extremely successful on the games field, he was also hugely popular, and many stories endure of his time here. Famously full of mischief, legend has it that Sir Roger Young once had reason to ‘have words’ following a late night excursion into what is now my back garden!” 

“He was amongst the first to welcome me warmly to the school when I started, even gifting me a historic prospectus of the school. Ever generous with his time and expertise, in what would become his final public visit to Watson’s, Scott returned to the Junior School last year to deliver two inspiring assemblies focused on Motor Neurone Disease and the work of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. His visit left a huge impact on our pupils, giving them a greater understanding of compassion and the power of community in supporting those facing life-changing illness.” 

“Although the rugby world will rightly celebrate him for his glittering international career and contribution to Scottish rugby, to Watson’s he will always be remembered first and foremost as one of our own - a much-loved former pupil, Watsonian and loyal friend to the school community, not least through his integral role with Watsonian Football Club.”   

David MacDonald, President of The Watsonian Club said: 

“Today’s news has been a devastating shock. It is hard to think of anyone who better embodied what it meant to be a Watsonian than Scott. His enduring affection for the school and unwavering support for the Watsonian community leaves a lasting impression on us all. Scott was immensely proud of being a Watsonian, and we are immensely proud of him.” 

Mike Ker, 1st XV Boys Rugby Coach at George Watson’s College said: 

“Scott’s passion for rugby, especially school rugby, was unmatched. After almost every school match, my phone would light up with a text or a call with ‘How did the boys get on?’ or ‘They were looking great out there today!’ He knew exactly what was happening with our players, from school matches right through to representative honours and, when one of our pupils recently captained Scotland's U18s, Scott was immensely proud. Above all else, Scott was simply a lovely man and a true Watsonian. His passion and encouragement meant so much to so many of us, and he will be greatly missed.” 

To provide a space for members of our community and everyone who loved and admired Scott, to come together, share stories, give comfort, and sign a book of condolence, pupils and staff will welcome visitors to Myreside Pavilion from 4pm - 8pm from Monday to Friday this week (18-22 May). Tea and coffee will be available throughout the evening and the bar will also be open.

In honour of Scott Hastings and in recognition of his lasting connection to the school, George Watson’s College will fly the school flag at half-mast this week. 

Scott’s passing is a great loss to our school, the wider Watsonian family and to the global rugby community. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
