- Senior School
As we approached the end of the Spring Term, our music concerts were, as ever, a highlight of the academic calendar. They offer pupils across the school the opportunity to get involved in music outside the classroom and expand their performance skill sets. For our senior pupils in particular, the concerts offer a welcome relief from exam preparation before many head off on exam leave next term.
S6 Journalist, Molly reports on the Senior School Spring Concert, documenting the highlights from the event and drawing on why this concert is so special to our S6 pupils:
The Senior School Assembly Hall was filled with brilliant music, talented musicians and a joyful audience for the recent Senior Spring Concert, which took place in the lead up to the end of term.
As always, the standard of the concert and the talent of the musicians was outstanding. The Spring Concert began with the Trad Band (run by Mr McCallum) playing 2 set pieces which included excellent solo performances. It was sadly the end of an era for the nine S6 performers in Trad Band who played one of their final performances together.
The Concert also involved many choirs such as College Chorus conducted by Mr Griffin, who performed The Blue Bird by Charles Villiers Stanford and Hear My Prayer by Felix Mendelssohn. One of these songs was an inspired choice after Mr Griffin performed this when he was younger. The S6 Cantemus sopranos also had a lovely last performance in choir, getting the opportunity to sing the Soprano 1/solo piece in The Blue Bird. The iconic Hear My Prayer was a very magical choral piece which concluded the concert featuring soloists, Emma (S6), Asena (S5) and Eve (S6). Cantemus performed the song What Was I Made For by Billie Eilish with the number being started by Hannah (S5) before the rest of the sopranos and altos joined in. Chamber Choir received enthusiastic applause after singing Rejoice in the Lamb with soloists Sofia (S6), Zara (S6), Terence (S6) and Alex (S6). The boys’ choir donned their bow ties again for another joyful performance of Fly Me to the Moon and Shut up and Raise Your Glass. They benefited from the supporting band featuring Mr Griffin on drums, Mr Lang on piano, Isla (S6) on bass guitar and Mr Fisher on the electric guitar!
The evening also featured Caritas Strings directed by Mrs Docherty, Ex Corde Choir and the Galleon Choir. The choirs were grateful to Organist, Morley Whitehead for a stirring accompaniment on the school’s organ.
The S6 pupils involved were sad to have played their final Senior Spring Concert with many having performed in various GWC concerts since Junior School. To mark the occasion, they all gathered on stage for one more applause.
This year’s concert reflected all the hard work put in by the pupils of Watson’s throughout the year, supported by the amazing music teachers who helped to make the evening so special. The concert was concluded by the S6 leavers making presentations to all the wonderful music staff and the audience was left enthralled by the talents of pupils across our Senior School.
