With our S3 production of Elf opening this evening, S6 Journalist-come-Stage-Crew member, Amelia explains what you can expect from this year’s show and how her involvement behind the scenes has benefited her:

As we wait in anticipation for Elf the Musical opening tonight, all cast, orchestra and crew members have been working extremely hard in preparation for this year's show.

The musical adaptation of Elf focusses around the central character of Buddy who crawled into Santa’s sack and was raised as an elf for 30 years before realising he is, in fact, human and looks a little ‘different’ from the other elves! Santa calmly explains to him that his father in New York doesn’t know of his existence, leaving Buddy to embark on a journey to find his Dad. The production is filled with Christmas spirit; concluding in Buddy’s success in finding his biological family and bringing the belief of Santa back to New York.

Complete with dynamic choreography, brilliant vocals and engaging storytelling, this year's cast have been working tirelessly since September to bring the story of Buddy the Elf to life. They have been ably supported by the wonderful orchestra (made up of staff and pupils) who have pulled together to ensure the Elf score truly sparkles! But of course, no show would run without a dedicated stage crew. Many S4-S6 pupils have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to guarantee all set changes are smooth and blackouts are kept to a minimum! Without the cast, crew and orchestra working together in harmony, the show would not be the same!

As a member of the crewing team, it goes without saying that, on occasion, production and stage management positions can be overlooked by viewers due to them not being ‘in the spotlight’. They spend hours upon hours preparing a variety of roles and responsibilities - from props, lighting, sound, media, set and stage to costume, hair and makeup. Crewing opportunities are open to pupils from S4-S6 and although it is hard work, it is exceptionally rewarding, a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends and socialise.

Such an opportunity to be involved in theatrical production is limited in other places but here at Watson’s, we are fortunate that our school provides such an enriching experience for pupils within the music and drama departments - the equipment, show structure and production values mimic those that are in professional theatre companies.

As a full company of actors, orchestra and crew, we are looking forward to our sell out performances which kick off tonight, Wednesday 22 November and run until Friday 24 November. We hope to see as many as possible in the audience and remember, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!”
