A Night to Celebrate Rabbie

A Night to Celebrate Rabbie
  • Senior School

Every January our S6s celebrate Burns Night as a year group. The event is one of the last functions they participate in together before their time at Watson’s comes to an end. As such, it is a thoroughly memorable event, full of camaraderie and Scots cheer!

Our S6 Journalist, Ruby reflects on the 2024 Supper and explains what makes the event so special:

Burns 1

“On the evening of the 30 January, merely five days late, the S6 pupils sat down to enjoy Watson’s annual Burns Supper.

After the enthusiastic crowd swarmed into the hall, donned with rare elements of tartan, (only a few seemed to have remembered to wear any!) we enjoyed a delicious dinner, powerful interpretations of classic Scottish poems and shared laughter at many topical jokes.

The night was planned by the S6 guidance team (we’re looking at you, Mr Greig!) alongside S6 pupils and their teamwork created a memorable, successful night. The pupil involvement was astounding, with many willing to be part of the evening despite the intimidating audience of their peers. Each performer showed confidence, humour and, overall, a great deal of talent.

There were several poems read throughout the event, as was to be expected, in addition to performances from a variety of talented music groups. One of the most notable of these was Molly’s rendition of ‘Address to a Haggis’ which she completed with an incredible amount of enthusiasm and flair. Furthermore, the whole room was utterly in awe of the beautiful duet of ‘The Skye Boat Song’, performed by Sofia and Eve. Finally, there were the traditional toasts to both the ‘Laddies and Lassies’, which, despite the controversy, proved entertaining to all.

The evening was a much needed break for the S6s, after an overwhelming month of deadlines, prelims, and overall success - may that be through results or purely making it through the stress alone.

All in all, the 2024 Burns Supper was a lovely night with the added bonus of being home before bedtime! This allowed for a well earned rest - something that will be crucial in order for the year group to keep achieving in their final days at Watson’s.”
