Phase 3 Building Works Update - 29 November 2011

The main contractor, AKP Scotland Limited, is continuing to make good progress on Phase 3.

The building is virtually wind and watertight and most structural works are now complete, so all that remains is mainly internal fit-out, pool works, floor coverings and painting.

We are on target to complete construction by Easter 2012 and plan to start using the new facilities at the beginning of the Summer Term. The latest cost estimate is in line with budget.

Phase 3 Building Works Update - 29 August 2011

Construction work on the GWC Centre for Sport is on programme and on budget

The area inside the main entrance has been demolished and cleared to create the central hub, reception and staff offices. The steel frame, blockwork and roof for these areas and for the new fitness suite and multi-gym are now in place.

Roof works are nearly complete and the building is almost wind and watertight, with the exception of certain glazed sections. The swimming pool hall has been re-built without the pillars and the refurbishment of the pool is under way.

On the lower ground level the changing rooms are being rebuilt. Work has also started on constructing the glazed corridor which will link the new fitness suite and changing rooms to the sports halls. The project remains on budget and we are still expecting to complete construction by Easter 2012.

Phase 3 Building Works Update – 7 June 2011

Construction work on the GWC Centre for Sport is progressing well.

Roofing works are almost complete and the new facility will shortly be wind and water tight. The steel frame, blockwork and roof for the fitness suite and new gym, which replace the demolished squash courts in the centre of the building, are now in place. The concrete slab on the lower ground level has been poured and the changing rooms in this area are being rebuilt. Building work on the swimming pool has also now commenced.

The project remains on budget and we are still expecting to complete construction before Easter 2012.

Phase 3 Building Works Update – 28 March 2011

Construction of the new facilities has continued apace and the project is still on programme and on budget.

The walls and roof of the new swimming pool hall are now almost complete and works to the swimming pool itself will begin shortly. Most of the sloping roof above the hub is now in place. The gym and fitness suite in the centre of the building have been floored and work has started on the roof over these areas.

We are still expecting to complete the project before Easter 2012.

Phase 3 Building Works Update – 21 February 2011

Construction work on the GWC Centre for Sport was delayed due to the severe weather before Christmas, but the project is still on programme and on budget.

The swimming pool hall has been taken down to pool deck level and the steel framework for the roof and walls rebuilt.  The foundations and structural steelwork for the fitness suite and new multi-gym have also been completed and the new building is now beginning to take shape.  We are still expecting to complete the project before Easter 2012.

Phase 3 Building Works Update — 13 December 2010

Work on the £6m George Watson’s Centre for Sport began over the summer with demolition work to clear the way for the exciting new layout in the building.

We are please to report that building work is more or less on schedule, despite the recent weather. The necessary demolition work has been carried out and the contractors are now in the process of creating new roof structures.

In the coming year we shall be planning for the opening of the new facilities and opportunities these will provide not just for pupils but for our whole Watson's community through the Galleon Club.

Addressing the Needs

Redevelopment of the Physical Education facilities is necessary to improve our high level of Physical Education provision.

Our Vision for Sport

Our vision is to create a sports facility, which will help to attract prospective pupils to Watson’s and then allow them to experience a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular sport.

The New Facilities

The new facilities will offer flexibility to take account of the changing needs of the curriculum. They will also ensure that we have sports facilities second to none in a Scottish school on a single campus.

Reaching Our Community

The Galleon Club currently has 700 members. With improved facilities it will provide a useful resource for the local community and generate increased revenue which can contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the new facility.
