Extraordinary Run of Success

Relay raceThe last week has seen some tremendous athletic performances by Watson’s pupils at the Edinburgh Schools’ Championships and Scottish Schools’ Relay Championships.

On Wednesday at the Edinburgh competition, our boys won 16 gold, 16 silver and six bronze medals out of 45 events. Our girls won five gold and three silver medals.

At the Scottish Schools Relay Championships on Saturday there were five age groups for the boys and girls and we won four golds and two silvers, the biggest medal haul of any school. The Primary boys’ team (Shaun Marshall, Hugh Ferguson, Fraser Cousin and Chris Davies) and Primary girls’ team (Charlotte Kelly, Sophie Ward, Natalie Robbins and Katie Robinson) both won gold.

Our U14 boys (Fraser McKay, Steven Millar, Philip Bryans and Ben Robbins) and U14 girls (Kirsty McKean, Barrie Lyell, Eilidh Thomson and Laura Sproule) also won gold medals.

Chris Kelly, Seamus Thomson, Chris MacBeth and James Innes won silver at U15 level, as did our U19 team of Alex Thomson, Grant Somerville, Jonny Wilson and Jamie Forbes. The silver for Alex Thomson was disappointing as he was going for a remarkable seven consecutive relay gold, one every year since Primary 7. It would have been an unprecedented achievement but the team just fell agonisingly short.
