Primary Seven Rugby v Kelvinside
On a wet and cool windy day, a tough Kelvinside team came to Myreside determined to take something from the game. The game began slowly with loose passes and knock ons due to the weather. Watson's JA2s slowly got into the game started to drive the ball forward and produced two tries before half time. Kelvinside came out strong in the second half and if it was not for some strong defending the result may have been different. The boys sealed the win with two very nice tries in the second half. This was the only match to survive the awful weather. David MacMillan, Michael Dick, Angus Coull and Anton Dowds all scored tries. The player of the game was Angus Coull, with an all action display! Final score – Watson's 14 Kelvinside 0.
Primary Six Hockey v Heriot's
Another fun filled Saturday morning for the P6 hockey girls. Overall we won 3 out of the 4 matches. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves – despite the showery downpours.

Saturday 1 March
Primary Seven Rugby v Heriot's
Heriot's kicked off playing against a strong wind. Watson's quickly recycled the ball and whipped it out to the wing, Ben Robbins - the Scottish Habana - who outsprinted the Heriot's defence to score a trademark try. It was a perfect start for the Watson's JA1s. Heriot's must have wondered what had happened to them because moments later Ben scored almost an exact copy of his first try and showed outstanding speed. It was not all one-way traffic however, as Heriot's mounted a string of attacks. Strong Watson's defence kept them at bay. Then just before half time, quick hands saw James Kidd in for a try. Watson's kicked off to Heriot's who seemed much more comfortable with the wind at their backs. But once again the Watson's defence was strong and some big hits from Gordon Rostron broke down the Heriot's attacks. Watson's regained possession and great passing from forwards and backs let Ben cross for his side's fourth try. Heriot's, however, would not go down without a fight and managed to force a five metre try on the Watson's try line. However, Connor Davidson took it against the head and snuffed out Heriot's best chance of scoring. The match finished when Adam Hastings leathered the ball up the pitch to the opposition corner. Ben Robbins picked up the ball after a great chase and was one on one with the full back - there was no contest. The match finished five tries to nil, with Adam Hastings keeping a 100% kicking record. Final Score – Watson's 20 Heriot's 0.
Players of the day were the whole team!
Match report by Adam Hastings
On a wet muddy pitch Watson's JA2s came out a bit sluggish with some missed passes and loose play. However, leading by two tries at half time, they realised they needed to up their game. In the second half there was much more effort put into running straight and not missing any tackles and this paid off with a number of tries, putting the game out of reach for the visitors. Try scorers - David MacMillan (3), Robert Lind (2), Anton Dowds (2) and Matthew Dove (1). Anton Dowds converted six of the tries. The player of the game was David MacMillan. Final Score – Watson's 30 – Heriot's 0
Primary Six Rugby v Heriot's
For the first time this season the opposition scored the first try of the game, putting the JB1s under serious pressure. Heriot's were showing real passion in their play and will surely be a force to be reckoned with next year. Hugh Ferguson and Rory Evans (man of the match) led from the front to ensure that we outscored our opponents in the second half, winning the game four tries to one. It was pleasing to see the team come back the way they did.
Final Score – Heriot's 1 Watson's 4
In lovely conditions at Goldenacre the JB2s earned a well-deserved victory against Heriot's. We started the game slowly but when we started to pass the ball and run straight the tries soon came.~ Thomas Foster was outstanding on the wing and Malcolm Marks played well in the forwards. Scott Henderson and James MacPherson also demonstrated some great skills in running with the ball. Player of the day was Thomas Foster.
Final Score – Heriot's 0 Watson's 9
The JB3s first game for a number of weeks – due to the weather – saw them visit Goldenacre.
With the opposition fielding two of our substitutes, the Watson's boys started brightly and, after dusting off the cobwebs, got into their stride, scoring two tries before half time.
A further four tries were scored in a much better second half, with debutant Laurence Bialy earning the man of the match award for his powerful running and aggressive endeavour.
Heriot's were stubborn opposition but the JB3s tackled well and made sure the opposition were hemmed into their own half for the majority of the match. Final Score – Heriot's 0 Watson's 6
On a cold, sunny day at Goldenacre the JB4s scored a good victory against Heriot's. Both teams benefited throughout the game from some expert coaching by the Heriot's referee. Two Watson's players made up numbers for the Heriot's team and the only opposition try was scored by Watson's pupil Jamie! The game started slowly but the pace improved with some good runs and gradually the JB1's gained the upper hand with some skilful tries being scored. The players of the day were the whole team! Final score - Heriot's 1 – Watson's 5

Primary Six Hockey v Mary Erskine's
All four teams were out on Saturday to play Mary Erskine's at home on the small astro pitch.
We had a really successful morning with all our teams winning their matches, and only one goal scored against us. All games were well-fought, very good contests - well done to all concerned!

Saturday 23 February
Primary Six Rugby v Hutchesons'
The JB1s exhibited a fantastic display of skill and determination to play open rugby in poor conditions ensured a comfortable 8–0 win over Hutchesons' Grammar School. A blistering first half performance put the result beyond doubt. In very wet and sticky conditions Josh Kerr controlled the game from stand-off, creating five tries for the side. Robbie Davidson was named man of the match mostly due to the versatility he showed by moving from prop to the wing and performed admirably. This was a team effort in its purest form. The boys are now looking forward to ending the season on a high with a high quality performance against Heriot's next weekend.
The JB2s also had a great victory against Hutchesons' and won the game 9 tries to nil. Malcolm Marks and Scott Thomson made their debuts for the team and they both played really well. In difficult conditions the team passed the ball well and the support play in the forwards was good. The backs played well as a unit and Thomas Dryden showed that straight running is so important when scoring tries - well done! Player of the day was Malcolm Marks.
Primary 7 Hockey v Glasgow Academy
Primary 7 A, B and C teams at last beat the bad weather this term to get out and have a great morning of hockey playing Glasgow Academy. All three matches were superb games with the girls playing extremely well to win all their games. The As won 5–1, Bs won 3–1 and Cs won 5–1.
P6 Hockey v Heriot's
The P6 hockey teams made their debut appearances for the school with four matches against Heriot's. There was fantastic effort, enthusiasism, teamwork and lots of skill on show, testament to the work put in to the training sessions before Christmas (by the girls and staff).
The teams all played two matches, 4 matches being won and 4 lost - the aggregate scores from all matches meant GWC edged the fixtures 32 goals to 28! Great fun was had by all and the girls eagerly await their next opponents.
Friday 15 February
Primary 7 Rugby v Bronte House School, Yorkshire
The English invaded Myreside and the Scots stood firm on Friday. The JA2s played a very solid match against their English counterparts on a fantastic day. Good tackling and rucking by the forwards allowed the backs to run into space and score tries. It was a competitive and friendly day with both schools enjoying their time together, with Watson's winning 32–3 in the end. Player of the game – Anton Dowds
The JA3s took on the touring Bronte House B team. They had the usual slow start and soon found themselves a score down. The plus side to this was it got them going and soon they had established a comfortable lead due mainly to individual running skills. This lead was extended in the second half and the JA3s ran out easy winners 29 - 6. Angus Coull was man of the match, due to his fierce forward play and his ability to win the ball in the loose.
Tuesday 5 February
Primary 7 Rugby v Bradford Grammar School, Yorkshire
The JA1s played Bradford Grammar School on a fine afternoon - there had been a lot of nervous anticipation about this match with worries about the size of the opposition! In the event the JA1 squad were smaller but this had no bearing on the result. The forwards competed well at every set piece and breakdown, winning lots of ball. The backs used this ball very well indeed showing slick handling to score 8 tries, and win 29–4. Indeed the opposition coach commented that every GWC player looked comfortable with ball in hand. A fantastic display by the whole team - Ben Robbins's broken play running earned him player of the day.
Saturday 19 January
Primary Seven Rugby v Stewart's Melville College (SMC)
Playing into a strong wind against a really tough and well organised defence, the JA1s produced a near perfect display of attacking rugby, strong defence and excellent recycling of the ball. SMC provided stiff resistance, but the constant pressure told when after a series of attacks, the ball was passed along the entire back line for full back Fraser McMillan to dot the ball down. A ne'er say die attitude meant Adam Hastings followed on his own fly hacks to gather the ball and dive over - half time score 8-0. The second half was another tough struggle, but good counter attacking meant Ben Robbins dived over in the left corner for a super try. Final score 11-0 to Watson's. It was very hard to pick a player of the day in this game, but the deserved winners were Dugald Berezford and Luke Gray - Dugald for his ability to always be around the ball and Luke for a fantastic display of all round rugby skills.
The JA2s started off 2008 with a loss. The SMC team worked hard and broke many tackles to take a 10-3 lead at half-time. Watson's just could not break down the tough defence and were unable to make any type of comeback. Final score 6-16. Robert Lind and Anton Dowds scored the tries for Watson's. Player of the day was Michael Jenkins - well done Michael.
On a chilly morning the JA3s fell back into bad habits and had one of their very slow starts, soon finding themselves two tries behind. The second try seemed to wake them up and the game became much more competitive, especially in the forwards. However the JA3s never managed to close the gap of those early tries, with some missed tackles not helping, and SMC won the game 23-10. Player of the day was Hamish Duncan for showing how he can make good territorial gains.
Primary Six Rugby v Stewart's Melville College (SMC)
It has been a while coming, but at last the bad weather broke and provided the JB1s with an opportunity to show what they were made off. On top of this there were a number of positional changes with Euan Gill making his debut for the team with an impressive display at scrum half. It was a powerful example of attacking team rugby with Watson's winning by 8 tries to 1. Josh Kerr took advantage of the extra space provided at his new position of outside centre by converting every chance he had to score, with a personal tally of 4 tries. A real Man of the Match performance!
The JB2s had a very tough game but managed to win the game 5 tries to 4. The boys worked quite well as a team, but tackling will need to improve before the next game. Campbell Orr was outstanding in the forwards and Thomas Foster played very well on the wing. Both were players of the day. We came out fighting in the second half and that was why the game was won - well done to all!
The JB3s maintained their 100% record with a very good performance against a well-disciplined and organised SMC side. Their first match since early December, the boys took very little time to dust-off any cobwebs and scored early on, captain David Virgo crossing. SMC replied with a super solo run, but parity was short lived for the visitors, as Scott Rae and David Virgo - again - scored after excellent moves. In the second half, tough tackling from the GWC boys denied the opposition any further tries, whilst slick passing and determined running saw three more from GWC - for Campbell Stephen, Malcolm Marks and Max McCallum. This was another fabulous display from the boys, built around teamwork and enjoyment. Final score 6-1. Man-of-the-match was Malcolm Marks who made significant ground every time he received the ball, no matter how many opponents were holding onto him!
Despite a difficult first half, conceding 4 tries to 1, the JB4s acquitted themselves well in the second half, finishing the game 6-4 down. Plenty to work on in practice!
