Hat Trick for Hoy

by Mrs Fiona MacFarlane, 19 August 2008
Former pupil, Chris Hoy (class of 1994) clinched a superb hat-trick of gold medals today with his victory in the sprint – after his earlier success in the team sprint and keirin – becoming the first Briton in 100 years to win three golds at the same Olympic Games.

Gareth Edwards, Principal, said of Chris’s success, “Everyone at Watson’s is very proud of all Chris has achieved, and we are delighted to have played a part in the life of Scotland’s greatest Olympian. He is a fantastic ambassador and role model for our pupils and the whole of Scotland.

He was a very popular student here, whose drive and determination in sport was spotted early in his primary school career. A genuine all rounder, he was a rugby captain early in his school career, a very able rower (even coaching younger pupils) and office bearer. Probably unsurprisingly his records show that he exhibited a great aptitude for cycling during Projects in his third year at the age of fifteen.

He remains incredibly supportive of the school and gives his time generously, when his training schedules permit and we hope that he will be able to come back to show our pupils his new haul of Olympic medals, as he did after the Athens Olympics.”
