History and Modern Studies

The Department's aim is to encourage all pupils to develop an interest in and insight into the processes which have shaped societies past and present. Through varied teaching strategies, pupils will be encouraged to develop their skills in communication, research and analysis, contributing to their personal, social and intellectual development.

Pupils study a broad range of topics varying in historical period, place and perspective. All of our courses are structured to develop understanding of concepts as well as events. These include headings such as power, representation, conflict, co-operation, democracy, need, cause and effect. How these come together to influence the lives of people is the unifying concern for both our subject areas.

Pupils in S1 follow courses in History and Modern Studies. S3 starts with an introductory unit to certificate courses and then follow examinations at Intermediate 2 leading to Higher and Advanced Higher. The Department also teaches four interest courses at S6 level – Scottish Studies, the NHS, Politics and American Studies.

The Department seeks to develop pupils’ understanding through a range of learning and teaching experiences. These include individual and group work, written tasks and source work, role play and debate, and the use of varied resources including ICT and audiovisual. Pupils are given many opportunities to develop their interests in our subject areas beyond the classroom, through field trips, visits from guest speakers, competitions and a variety of other activities. Through our varied learning and teaching strategies, and the use of peer and formative assessments, as well as formal ones, the Department seeks to aid pupils in becoming independent learners.
