Guidance
An extensive structure exists to ensure that a high level
of individual care and attention is maintained throughout our sizeable
school.
Form Teachers, who spend 15 minutes with their class at the
start of each day, are supported by an experienced team of Year
Heads, who oversee all aspects of Guidance provision. Two Year
Heads
are
designated
to each new S1, and the Year Heads move up the school with
their
year group, providing pupils with continuity and the basis for
evolving relationships based on trust. As pupils enter S5,
each selects a personal Tutor from the teaching staff, whose
role it
is to offer guidance, discuss references and build up an adult
relationship as pupils prepare to make the transition into
life after school.
In addition to teaching the PSD (Personal and Social Development)
programme, the pastoral responsibilities of the Guidance team
include listening to pupils, advising
them
on a wide range of issues, and developing
relationships through a range of social activities. We have an
ongoing programme of staff development, which
has included recent training on issues such as Child Protection,
Drug Abuse, Bullying, Depression in Adolescence and Bereavement.
Our full-time matron also co-operates closely with Guidance staff,
from her base in our well-equipped medical suite.
The School attaches great
value to an active partnership with parents, in dealing with any
problems which may be affecting our pupils both at school and at
home. We have a strong policy of encouraging parents to get in touch
with us if they are concerned about their son or daughter, rather
than waiting until parents' evenings.
