Broadening Horizons
Day Trips
During the course of a session all children from P1 to P7 will have
the opportunity to enjoy visits linked to the Environmental Studies
programme. The number of visits tends to increase as the children progress
through the Junior School. In the Lower Primary some popular excursions
have included Edinburgh Zoo and its Education Centre, the Butterfly Farm,
the Museum of Childhood and the surgery of a local vet.
Upper Primary day visits are always many and varied, and to date have
included the Sea Bird Centre at North Berwick, British Petroleum at Grangemouth,
Stirling Castle, Bannockburn and the many sights of Edinburgh's Old and
New Towns. Extensive use has also been made by all year groups of the
Water of Leith Conservation Trust's Education Unit.
Extra-curricular
There is a wide range of clubs available to Upper Primary children,
either at lunchtimes or after school, and a separate booklet is available.
These include activities such as bridge, badminton, cross-country running,
drama and Scripture Union. Children are encouraged to take part in an
activity and to develop their talents.
Residential Visits
Here a progressive programme is in place for pupils from P4 to P7. P4
pupils experience their first residential visit in York, where they spend
two days and one night to further their study of the Vikings.
Having created five new classes for the start of P5, we take the entire
year group to Dounans Camp in Aberfoyle early in the session for a four
day and three night programme of team building and personal challenge.
P6 pupils spend a week at Meigle Camp in Perthshire, this time with
an all-pervading historical theme, as part of their study of the Jacobites.
Currently the P7 year group spends a week in London. From
their base in the secure and child friendly environment of Baden-Powell
House,
our
pupils explore the many historical, cultural and tourist sights of London.

section of the Junior School site.
