Writing Exercise 9: The modal verb "dovere"
Here is a translation of Exercise 9:
1. I must go now; I'm in a hurry.
= Devo andare adesso; ho fretta.
2. Must you go so soon?
= Devi andare così presto?
3. Why do you always have to contradict me?
= Perché devi sempre contradirmi?
4. We must all try to help him.
= Dobbiamo tutti cercare di aiutarlo.
5. I don't know what we ought to do. (N.B. ought = conditional mood.)
= Non so cosa dovremmo fare.
6. My parents ought to let me go on holiday with my friends, now that I'm grown
up.
= I miei genitori dovrebbero permettermi di andare in vacanza con gli amici,
adesso che sono adulto/a.
7. I ought to have written but I didn't have any time. (N.B. ought
to have = past conditional mood.)
= Avrei dovuto scrivere ma non avevo il tempo.
8. He shouldn't have done it; it's not fair.
= Non avrebbe dovuto farlo; non è giusto.
9. They should have arrived by now; I don't understand what has happened.
= Ormai avrebbero dovuto arrivare; non capisco cosa è successo.
10. This letter arrived; I should have given you it before.
= Questa lettera è arrivata; avrei dovuto dartela prima.
11. How should I have written it?
= Come avrei dovuto scriverlo/scriverla?
12. I had to tell the truth; you should have gone to school.
= Ho dovuto dire la verità: avresti dovuto andanre a scuola.
13. If I had to (N.B. Imperfect subjunctive) change my plans, I would
be bery angry.
= Se io dovessi cambiare i miei progetti, sarei molto arrabbiato/a.
14. I would have been very angry if they had decided to leave me at home.
= Sarei stato/a molto arrabbiato/a se avevano deciso di lasciarmi a casa.
15. Although they sometimes had to repeat a few words, I usually understood
what they were saying.
= Benché qualche volta avessero divuto ripetere qualche parola, di solito
ho capito cosa dicevano.
