What is a preposition?

A preposition is a little word which stands before a noun, making a phrase which can show where, when or how the action of the verb in the sentence occurs.

The following sentences contain phrases introduced by a preposition which has been underlined.

  1. Hephaistos split Zeus' head with an axe.

  2. She saw Adonis' body lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

  3. After many days the rain stopped and the earth emerged from the face of the sea.

Now read the following paragraph and find all the prepositions,

He decided that the only way to escape from the island was to fly. So he collected feathers and stuck them together with wax. On a bright sunny day, father and son flew off into the sky. They flew through the clear air and headed towards the mainland of Greece. Icarus flew too high and the sun melted the wax on his wings and he came crashing into the sea which is still called the Icarian Sea in memory of him.
